What are “X Factor” fish?
On fish farms, it is typical that we see some missing fish within the data by the time we harvest. We call these “X Factor” fish and there can be many reasons for them:
Predator loss — for example, birds eating fish from the pens
Theft — if fish are removed from the cage
Cannibalism — though not common in larger trout, occasionally bigger fish eat smaller fish
Undocumented escapes — we inspect the nets for holes visually above and below the surface at least once per week
Uncounted mortalities — though we endeavour to count all mortalities, some may be missed through decomposition or oversight
Runts — these are sometimes not counted by farm, harvest or processing staff
Counting discrepancies — our automatic counters are accurate up to 98%, which may mean the fish were never there in the first place
